13 Feb, 2018

Supreme Court ordered on Tuesday not to arrest the former Malir Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Rao Anwar and granted him protective bail while directing him to appear before the court on Friday.

According to local media reports, during the court proceedings, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar also ordered the formation of Joint Investigation Team (JIT) regarding the ‘extra judicial murder’ of Naqeebullah Mehsud.

The court also maintained that Anwar should be provided security till the JIT completes its probe. These directives came after the former SSP wrote a letter to the CJP.

The case was heard by a three-member bench headed by the CJP. Inspector General of Sindh Police AD Khawaja was also present during the hearing.

SC gives Sindh police 10 more days to arrest Rao Anwar

The former SSP is in hiding ever since he tried to flee the country last month. He is wanted in the ‘extra judicial murder’ of 27-year-old Naqeebullah, a native of Waziristan. He was killed, along with three other suspected terrorists, on January 13 in an alleged encounter with a police team headed by Anwar. However, Naqeebullah’s family has claimed that the deceased was innocent and was killed in a ‘fake’ encounter.
