The Society for the Protection of the Rights of Child (SPARC) has welcomed the re-introduction of the proposed bill by the present government for establishment of a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for the protection and promotion of human rights.
A spokesman of SPARC informed here on Thursday that the said bill was earlier presented before the National Assembly in 2005 and referred to the then standing committee on Law, Justice and Human Rights for discussion and comments, but it was put in cold storage for the rest of the term of that Assembly.
The establishment of such a commission which is called National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) in the human rights parlance are the primary protection mechanisms for the promotion and protection of human rights in the countries, the spokesman said and added that in addition to that, providing a support to human rights defenders working on the ground and developing a jurisprudence on human rights that will conform to international human rights principles is direly required.
