In a very rare event, our hot star the sun will reportedly get ‘cooler’ and ‘dimmer’ in upcoming years, a pattern that repeats after every 11 years or so.
Scientists from University of California conducted the study by combining data from decades of research on the sun. They predicted that an event called ‘Grand Solar Minimum’ will happen that will make the sun dimmer and cooler than it already is, however, this phenomenon won’t be happening until 2050.
NASA plans on ‘touching the Sun’
The sun changes occur every 11 years or so, where either the sun goes through regular cycles of solar minimum where it is calm, or solar maximum where the sun is incredibly active. As the study published in Astrophysical Journal Letters suggest, in this event of solar minimum, the sun will be around 7% cooler, reported BGR.
In this solar minimum, the sun will give out less solar flares and sunspots that will lead to reduced ultraviolet radiation towards Earth. This can have effects on the ozone layer, temperatures and weather on Earth. However, the team leader Dan Lubin warned that this cool down of sun would not, however, stop global warming but might slow it down, reported Fox News.
