Natural disasters

04 Jun, 2012

Natural disasters have caused tremendous damage to our country in recent years. Our country is already facing serious issues such as terrorism, energy crisis. So it's significant to consider how our government is prepared to cope with natural disasters in the future.
Over 1,750 people were killed and nearly 20 million were afflicted by floods in 2010 and more than 800,000 families are still devoid of permanent shelter as a new monsoon season approaches. There could be more disastrous floods in the future as our irrigation system, constructed in 1932, is now too antiquated. A comprehensive plan should be formulated in consultation with relevant experts to face natural calamities. The government has to reinstate its credibility as people are avoiding giving donations to the state-run institutions for the rehabilitation of flood survivors.
It is imperative for the government to invest in efforts aimed at showing better preparedness towards natural calamities.
