Police on Sunday claimed that a local leader of the Awami National Party (ANP), Liaquat Bangash, killed himself by jumping off the roof of an apartment building to avoid arrest in Rabia City in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area.
The incident occurred in the limits of the Sharea Faisal police station.
According to police, Liaquat Bangash alias Liaquat 'Tension' was found dead near Rabia City apartment complex. Following the news of his death, tension gripped many parts of the city, including Gulistan-e-Jauhar.
Unidentified men resorted to intense firing in the air in Safoora Goth, Pehalwan Goth, University Road, Lasbela, Patel Para and Old Sabzi Mandi areas, suspending all social and commercial activities.
Although heavy contingents of Rangers and police were deployed in violence-hit areas, they remained ineffective in bringing the situation under control. Liaquat's body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for post-mortem examination. Doctors reserved the post-mortem report and sent samples to a laboratory for chemical examination.
Talking to reporters, Ghulam Shabbir Sheikh, Additional Inspector-General of Crime (Investigation Department) said that the deceased had "jumped off from the roof of the Rabia City apartments to avoid arrest during a police raid". He said that the deceased was wanted in several serious offences, including targeted killings. He was also arrested in the past, he said.
