Babar Awan case: AGP issued notices

28 Jun, 2012

Adjourning contempt of court case hearing against former law minister Babar Awan, the Supreme Court issued notices to Attorney General for Pakistan in the case on Wednesday. The Supreme Court comprised Justice Aijaz Afzal and Athar Saeed. Ali Zafar, the counsel for Awan, cited 24 contempt of court cases with a view to substantiating his arguments and requested the bench to issue notice to Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) to summon record of all the described cases.
During the proceedings, Awan was denied permission to speak. Upon which, he said he had been facing a media trial for the last six months. Awan raised the question before the bench: "What is the law under which I am being prosecuted in the contempt case?" The court had indicted Babar Awan under the contempt charges, observing that he had committed contempt by ridiculing the superior judiciary during a press conference soon after the formation of Memogate commission. The hearing was adjourned till July 2.
