The poultry farmers have increased price of chicken meat by Rs 45 per kilogram due to short supply and high demand in the city during the past two - three days. The retailers sold the chicken meat at Rs 225 per KG on Thursday against Sunday's price of Rs 180 per kilogram.
Former President All Pakistan Poultry Association (APPA), Abdul Basit told Business Recorder that months of June, July, August and September are very difficult for poultry farmers as the birds could not get their full weight in a humid and hot environment. He said some 22 percent birds perish in summer and rainy season, therefore most owners close their farms to avoid huge financial losses.
Basit further pointed out that farmers were selling their stocks as less price than their cost of production. The prolonged electricity outages have forced small farmers to close down their farms as they could not afford to produce electricity by oil run generators. He said the government should provide liberal incentives to the poultry farmers so that they could provide chicken meat to the consumers at affordable prices.
