Inquiry into convict's death launched

29 Jun, 2012

A judicial inquiry into the death of a 45-year-old woman blasphemy convict started on Thursday. Local Judicial Magistrate Liaquat Naqvi is conducting the inquiry. Aalia Bibi's death still remained shrouded in mystery, as Inspector-General of Prisons, Punjab, Farooq Nazir constituted a three-member inquiry committee, comprising Superintendent, Central Jail, Multan, Saeedullah Gondal, Deputy Superintendent Haji Mazhar Waheed and Jail Doctor Muhammad Haroon.
Jail employees told Business Recorder on condition of anonymity that Aalia Bibi had insulted the 'Chief Chakkar', Khurshid Bibi, who had stopped her food and water for at least three days. She was so much humiliated that she chose to end her life at her own hands.
Later, Jail Superintendent put a water cooler in her cell and pretended to inject intravenous drips to prove that she died of a heart attack. Dr Haroon said: "She was not a heart patient. However, she was a schizophrenia patient but she was never treated." Magistrate Liaquat Naqvi said: "No culprit would go unpunished and autopsy report would decided whether she died of a heart attack or she committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling electric fan on Monday."
