Employees irked by KDA's defunct status

01 Jul, 2012

Annoyed over continuous working as a defunct department, the Karachi Development Authority is still endeavouring and making contacts with relevant officialdoms to get old authority's independent status restored; however, no official response has so far been received by the government in favour of the authority.
The workers' union of KDA has also written a letter to Federal and Provincial Government authorities, requesting them to restore erstwhile independent status of the body and appoint administrative head to run its affairs. KDA had been operational and looking after the land and revenue issues across the city before the introduction of Sindh Local Government Ordinance (SLGO) 2001. However, as the SLGO 2001 came into practice, KDA became defunct and it was included as a wing in CDGK's Land and Revenue Department.
KDA's CBA in its letter urged the government for immediate appointment of an administration head or chief transaction officer for dealing with the affairs of authority and to regulate its administrative matters. A letter sent by the KDA Labour Union, CBA, regretted that no administrative set up has so far been arranged after the expiry of the four months [contrary to the pledge made by Sindh Government in January this year for restoration of KDA's old status in 120 days]. The letter added that KDA employees are facing great difficulties in administrative matters.
CBA complained that repeated requests were made to the Prime Minister of Pakistan and high-ups of the Government of Sindh, but to no avail. The employees requested the Federal Government to organise KDA's administrative set up in accordance with the notification issued by the Sindh government on December 9, 2011.
KDA Labour Union General Secretary Ashfaque Chishti said the CBA had asked Administrator Karachi Mohammad Hussain Syed to restore KDA's Secretariat Department under the supervision of the Municipal Commissioner so that problems faced by employees of the authority could be resolved internally. KDA currently has more than 4,500 employees.
