Power shortfall surges to 5,820 megawatts

04 Jul, 2012

Power shortfall surged further to 5820MW with dysfunctional power plants due to short supply of fuel and technical faults on Tuesday. Those being out of function due to short supply of fuel included KAPCO of 140MW, Orient of 213MW, Saif of 105MW and Sapphire of 209MW respectively. The Foundation Power of 175MW was closed due to technical problem.
Power generation through hydel, thermal and IPPs stood at 4527MW, 1689MW and 6374MW respectively. Meanwhile, power supply to KESC yet remained at 660MW. Short generation 12570MW against high demand of 18507MW has resulted into power outages for two hours after every alternate hour in city like Lahore.
The situation is more horrible in politically less important cities where no set schedule is being observed by respective DISCOs. The industrial sector is also under pressure, as the government has withdrawn exemption from load shedding and electricity supply pressure is also being compromised leading to non-operative production capacities.
