Pakistan has been ranked in the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) as the most improved in the theft ranking for countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials.
In its Nuclear Security Index released for the year 2020, the leading US non-proliferation watchdog noted that Pakistan has improved its overall score by seven points. The report stated that most of Pakistan’s improvements are in the Security and Control Measures category because of its passage of new regulations.
"Pakistan has steadily improved in the Security and Control Measures category over time with the passage of new regulations, improving by +8 in 2014, +2 in 2016, and +6 in 2018," the report said.
The report further said that as compared with other countries’ score improvements in the Security and Control Measures category, Pakistan’s increase of +25 is the second-largest improvement of any country since the Index first launched in 2012.
The index has ranked Australia first for the fifth time, Canada and Switzerland tied for the second, Germany was fourth and the Netherlands and Norway tied for fifth.
Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States Asad Majeed welcomed the Nuclear Threat Initiative index for the year 2020.
