KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct local government elections in Sindh within 120 days in accordance with the law. The direction came on a petition against non-holding of local bodies' elections in the province.
According to a written order of the court released here on Friday, the ECP counsel, Umer Lakhani, filed a statement on behalf of the Special Secretary of ECP, Zafar Iqbal Hussain, and submitted that the term of the local government councils expired on August 30, and under Section 219 (4) of the Election Act and Section 21 (3) of the Sindh Local Government Act 2013, it is the mandate of the ECP to conduct local government elections within a period of 120 days after expiry of their term.
He submitted that the ECP was fully committed to conducting the local government elections following provision of notifications regarding number of seats/constituencies of the local government and requisite map.
