Sindh top contributor in TY18

ISLAMABAD: Sindh remained the highest contributor of taxes (45 percent) during the Tax Year 2018 followed by the Punjab with a contribution of 34.99 percent in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) taxes during this period. The FBR has conducted province-wise Tax Directory analysis for year-ended June 30th, 2018 (returns filed up to September 14, 2020) based on income tax.

According to the FBR analysis, the region-wise tax collection showed 0.12 percent contribution of taxes by the Gilgit-Baltistan during tax year 2018.

The Capital Territory contributed 14.77 percent in taxes during tax year 2018, and the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa contributed 3.54 percent in the FBR taxes, during the period under review.

Balochistan province contributed 1.67 percent in terms of income tax through filing of income tax returns for the tax year 2018.

Province-wise filers' data (tax year 2018) revealed that a total of 2,852,349 taxpayers filed returns during tax year 2018.

Out of this, the number of filers of income tax returns stood at 1,696,533 (59.48 percent filers) in the Punjab.

In Sindh, the number of filers stood at 779,771 (27.34 percent filers). The number of income tax filers in Balochistan was 52,101 (1.83percent filers).

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the number of filers was 171,303 (6.01 percent), and the number of filers in the Capital Territory was 151,204 (5.30 percent).

The FBR's tax directory also showed that the companies in Pakistan paid approximately 56 percent of the total tax collection, followed by non-salaried individuals at 21 percent, and salaried individuals at 14 percent. The lowest proportion of taxes for the year ending June 2018 came from the association of partnerships (AoPs) that stood at 8.5 percent of the total taxes collected. While companies contributed to the highest proportion of the taxes, they form only two percent of the total tax filers in Pakistan.

Non-salaried individuals make up for 54 percent of tax filers, salaried individuals make up for 42 percent, and the AoPs make up for two percent of the total tax filers.

The residential status-wise filers revealed that resident filers stood at 97.76 percent, whereas, non-resident filers were 2.24 percent.

A total of 2,788,335 returns were filed by residents during tax year 2018, whereas 64,014 non residents filed returns during this period.
