KARACHI: The Model Customs Collectorate (MCC), Gwadar, on Friday claimed to have thwarted an attempt to transport heroin worth over a billion rupees to Karachi.
According to customs officials, the action was taken on a tip-off that some people were planning to smuggle a huge quantity of drugs from Gwadar to different parts of the country. In the light of the tip-off, Dr. Tahir Qureshi, the collector of Customs, Gwadar, ordered intense vigilance on the routes.
As a result, a customs patrolling squad intercepted a suspicious oil tanker heading to Karachi near the police checkpoint at Winder. However, the driver of the tanker allegedly sped the vehicle away while an associate of his opened fire on the customs staff to stop them from chasing the oil tanker. Later, the customs staff seized the oil tanker and recovered 176 kilograms of high quality heroin powder worth Rs1.06 billion in the international market.
