Over 1.2 million metric tonnes of wheat stored in Sindh warehouses are on the brink of spoilage as contracts for pesticide spray could not be allotted in the warehouses even after six months.

As per reports, the wheat purchased at the cost of Rs 42 billion in March and April, some 1.2 million metric tonnes of wheat is lying inside and outside the warehouses in Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Mirpur Khas, and Shaheed Benazirabad.

Tenders have been called for pesticide spray in warehouses in June and the authorities were informed after completing the work. However, not a single contract has been allotted in the last three months, due to which insects have started infesting the wheat.

Reports said that when contacted the Food Secretary in this regard, the official did not pick up the phone or reply to the message.
