ISLAMABAD: Mayor Islamabad Anser Aziz Sheikh has resigned to protest the transfer of key directorates from the Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad (MCI) to the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
According to the sources, the mayor tendered his resignation to the relevant authorities on Tuesday.
There has been a tug-of-war between the Local Government Commission of Islamabad dominated by the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Mayor Anser Aziz Sheikh who belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The LG Commission has sacked Sheikh but he managed to retain the seat after fighting a legal battle with the latter.
Sheikh is also facing an inquiry for awarding development contracts to private contractors.
The four directorates of the MCI transferred to the CDA include, the Environment, Sanitation, Water Supply, and Engineering.
A notification in this regard has also been issued.
The decision is subject to approval of the federal government, and has been made in order to ensure smooth and effective service delivery in the capital city, and to ease the difficulties being faced by its citizens.
Directorates accompanied by related formations of the MCI are entrusted to the CDA for an interim period of six months under Section 94(2) of the Islamabad Local Government Act, 2015.
All Directorates of Environment Wing (Urban, Regional, Parks), Directorate of Sanitation and City Sewerage, Directorates of Water (Bulk Water Supply and Water and Sewerage Development), and Directorates of Engineering (MPO, Street Lights and MR&M) would be transferred to the CDA.
