ISLAMABAD: Chairman Insaf Lawyers Forum Barrister Ali Zafar said the responsibility to take the proverbial first step towards reforming and improving the legal system fell on the legal fraternity. He was addressing the Insaf Lawyers Forum Convention at the Convention Centre Islamabad, where Prime Minister Imran Khan was the chief guest. Ali Zafar demanded them to begin the process at the earliest.
Adding to the suggestions, on the reformation process of the legal system that is slow and expensive, Barrister Ali Zafar suggested a two-pronged strategy to the prime minister: One, he asked for the increase in the number of judges in courts; two, he suggested the formation of a commission to investigate reasons behind delays in the dispensation of justice and to give recommendations as to how the legal system can be reformed.
Quoting the famous phrase of US President Abraham Lincoln about democracy, "Democracy is government of the people, by the people, and for the people," Barrister Ali Zafar criticised the political elite for not following the definition in totality. He said: "The political elite have been using 'of the people' and 'by the people' part of the definition because it helped them form a government with the help of the people. However, 'for the people' has never been their cup of tea, hence, no work has been done to facilitate the common man in the street."
