A man was arrested on Saturday after people complained that he had buried his newborn daughter alive barely a day after her birth in a village in Khanewal district. The incident occurred in village No16/9-R named Katcha Khuh which is about 70 kilometres East of Multan.
SHO of Katcha Khuh Police Station Chaudhry Shamshad Ali said that the accused Chand Khan,35, had confessed to the crime. He said that during interrogation, the accused said that his daughter was born with an 'abnormally large skull' and he wanted to get rid of her.
The SHO quoted the accused as telling that he had asked the gynaecologist to inject poison to kill her, but she refused. Then he wrapped her in a cloth and took to a local mosque for 'funeral prayer'. He abruptly took the child to a graveyard in a neighbouring village after the child cried during her 'funeral prayer'.
He said that he had buried the child alive. The mother of the girl Robina Shamshad said: "I did not see her because I was unconscious after caesarean section." However, She said that this was her sixth daughter and her husband wanted a boy.
DPO Khanewal Waqar Abbasi said: "We have arrested the man who buried his daughter alive but we have no complainant against him or eye-witnesses to prove the case." The incharge of the private clinic where the child was born refused to confirm or deny if the girl was abnormal.
