At least 15 people including 11 women were killed on Wednesday in a stampede at a stadium where thousands had gathered to apply for visas at a nearby Pakistan consulate.
A spokesman for the provincial hospital Zahir Adel confirmed that ten others including senior citizens were also wounded. Over 3,000 Afghans had gathered to collect tokens needed to apply for a visa to travel to Pakistan, Al Jazeera reported.
“The visa applicants jostled to secure their token from the consulate officials...the crowd got out of control, leading to a stampede,” an official in Jalalabad said.
Pakistan's Ambassador to Afghanistan Mansoor Ahmad Khan expressed his sadness at the casualties reported.
