(Karachi) The Supreme Court has granted bail to the chief executive of Jang Group of Newspapers, Mir Shakilur Rehman, in a case related to allegedly illegally acquiring land during the tenure of then Punjab chief minister Nawaz Sharif, local media reported on Monday.

The top court granted bail to Rehman against a surety bond of Rs10 million. The Lahore High Court had earlier denied bail to Rehman, after which he had appealed the decision in the Supreme Court.

On March 13, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested Mir Shakilur Rahman in a land scandal involving 54 kanals in Johar Town, Lahore.

The accountability bureau stated that Rahman was arrested for not giving satisfactory answers to their 26-point questionnaire. Rahman is accused of illegally obtaining 54 plots and concessions from former prime minister Nawaz Sharif when he was the Punjab chief minister in 1986.
