Teachers of Federal Urdu University of Science, Arts and Technology (FUUAST) have demanded the appointment of new Vice Chancellor of the varsity as per recommendations of the search committee. Seema Naz, the university's Senate member said during a press conference that any appointment against the university charter would not be accepted.
She said that the search committee responsible for appointing Federal Urdu University's new vice-chancellor had recommended four names to the university's senate a few weeks ago.
It reviewed names of 47 candidates.
She said that the search committee was formed in the 20th meeting of FUUAST Senate. She demanded for convening Senate meeting immediately to finalise the names for the post so that the university's administration could be run in a smooth manner.
"If appointment of VC was made against the charter of the university, teachers would launch a protest campaign," she added.
Dr Tauseef Ahmad Khan, Dr Iftikhar Ahmad Tahri and Dr Nasir Iqbal also attended the press conference. The post became vacant after the then-FUUAST vice-chancellor, Professor Dr Mohammad Qaiser, took charge of the Karachi University (KU) on February 10 this year.
The Senate of FUUAST has to finalise three nominations for the post of VC which would later be sent to the President of Pakistan to finalise a suitable candidate for the slot.
Deputy Chairman Senate FUUAST Aftab Ahmed Khan is bound to convene the meeting under the directions of President of Pakistan, who is also the Chancellor of FUUAST, to take the decision on new fresh appointment on the post.
The Search Committee had recommended the following names for the post of VC: Dr Zafar Iqbal, Dean Faculty of Arts, University of Karachi, Dr Altaf Hussain, former VC of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOPU), Professor Moinuddin of FUUAST and Dr Shahid Mehboob of the Government College University, Faislabad.
