The government on Tuesday appointed Farooq Ahmed Awan Secretary IT as new Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), it is learnt. Dr Mohammad Yaseen had vacated the PTA Chairmanship slot on July 23, after completing his four-year service term. Telecom Act allows government to appoint three members of regulatory authority.
According to section 3.2 of Telecom Act, the Authority shall consist of three members one of whom shall be a professional telecommunication engineer and other shall be a financial expert, to be appointed by the Federal Government for a term of four years and shall be eligible for appointment on similar term or terms.
PTA officials said that on July 28, the government appointed Farooq Awan as third member PTA through a notification which was mandatory. Talking to Business Recorder, Farooq Awan confirmed that government has appointed him as new PTA Chairman. "I received information from the Establishment division that I am appointed as PTA Chairman", said Farooq Awan.
