The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to take legal action against those responsible for the appointment of Ayaz Niazi as head of National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL). A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the NICL scam case.
Submitting of report in pursuance of court's orders, FIA Director Legal, FIA Azam Khan, apprised the bench that the authority had received a cheque for Rs 420 million which, he said, was bounced. However, he told the court that a case was registered against the defaulters.
Khan further told the bench that Mohsin Habib Warraich, one of the accused in the NICL scam, had been blacklisted and would be arrested soon. According to him, no country can issue a passport to Warraich now. Expressing its dismay over blacklisting Moshin Warraich without cancelling his old passport, the bench said old passport was required to have been cancelled.
Justice Jawwad S Khawaja, a member of the bench, observed that some influential persons were protecting the accused involved in the case. The Chief Justice remarked that it was the duty of the court to recover the embezzled money. Earlier on Wednesday, the bench directed the authorities to arrest those involved in the corruption in the NICL by Thursday. Later the bench adjourned hearing of the case till August 17.
