Shehbaz Sharif likely to be made acting president of PML-N

26 Feb, 2018

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will most likely announce Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif as their acting president in a meeting to be held in Lahore tomorrow.

According to local media reports, the party has called a Central Working Committee on February 27, in which they will be announcing their president initially for a period of 40 days. The decision to make Shehbaz as the president was reportedly made during a meeting in Jati Umra, where deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was also present.

After the disqualification of Nawaz as the PML-N head, there have been speculations of possible candidates to be made the party head. Along with Shehbaz, Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of Nawaz, and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were the top candidates to be possibly handed the baton to. Tomorrow's meeting will end all the speculations when PML-N will announce their next president.

ECP removes Nawaz Sharif’s name as party President from its record

Nawaz was disqualified by the Supreme Court (SC) last year in July from his position as prime minister as well as lost his party’s presidency. However, after the Elections Act 2017 he was re-elected as the PML-N president.
Political parties including Pakistan Peoples Party, Awami Muslim League and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf petitioned the apex court to look into the controversial law. The SC had then begun the disqualification hearing. On February 21, the SC ruled that a disqualified politician cannot lead a political party. Therefore, Sharif was then removed as the head of his party.
