LAHORE: The Punjab government has directed the ethanol manufacturing units in the province to document current status with regarding to installation of wastewater treatment plants for disposal of liquid effluents under compliance of the Punjab Environment Quality Standards (PEQS).
Decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Environment Protection Department (EPD) Punjab and the representatives of the Pakistan Ethanol Manufacturer’s Association, held at the LCCI on Wednesday. Secretary EPD Punjab Dr Naeem Rauf chaired the meeting who called upon all the stakeholders to play their role for preventing environmental pollution by installation of wastewater treatment plants to control environmental pollution.
Main objective of meeting was installation of wastewater treatment plants in the distilleries for disposal of their liquid effluents under compliance of Punjab Environment Quality Standards (PEQS).
It was decided each unit will document current status clearly defining their treatment options installed and their efficiency so as to point out the units lagging behind in this regard. The secretary EPD cleared that an action committee will be constituted including representatives from the EPD, universities, IUCN, WWF and PEMA technical members to work out gap and phasewise solution proposal for ultimate compliance of EQS. On this occasion DG EPA Ambreen Sajid, Director EPD Naseem ur Rehman and other related officials were also present.
