Partly Facetious: There's nothing in the book that is controversial

11 Sep, 2012

"I read the book by the navy Seal titled No Easy Day."
"He was part of the mission to kill Osama bin Laden (OBL) and the book is controversial with the Pentagon claiming that the author did not get clearance, as required."
"But there was nothing in the book that is controversial."
"Did not the author reveal that a lawyer who was either from the Department of Defense or the White House told the get OBL team members that if 'he (OBL) does not pose a threat, you will detain him' and this was in response to a question whether it was to be an assassination."
"Right, and let me quote from the book, 'roughly fifteen minutes had passed and Bin Laden had plenty of time to strap a suicide vest or simply get his gun.....we were less than five steps from getting to the top when I heard suppressed shots....the point man had seen a man peeking out of the door on the right side of the hallway... OBL was dead."
"Right, and the book notes that, 'Bin Laden had more time to prepare than the others, and yet he still didn't do anything. Did he believe his own message? Was he willing to fight the war he asked for? I don't think so...there is no honour in sending people to die for something you won't even fight for yourself.'"
"Right, but some comments about the kill ensuring Obama's reelection bid and how the politicians procrastinate in giving orders and yet are quick to take credit may hurt the Obama reelection campaign. But was there anything on our response?"
"Yes, the civilian neighbours who were awakened by the noise of the operation were told by one of the team members in Pashto that there is a security operation underway and they obliged and went back to their houses with a few posting messages on twitter about helicopters and noise however our military's response as per the book was rather interesting: 'my brain went back to the booklet on Pakistan's air defences. There was no chance they didn't know we were there. I just hoped we had a big enough lead on anything chasing us."
"The book also notes that F-16s circled around Abbottabad before widening their search which allowed the Americans to arrive unchallenged back in Jalalabad."
"True, but you know what I loved most about the book? The author donated most of the book's proceeds to charities that support families of fallen Seals. Reminds me of some of our great leaders, civilian and military alike, who pocket proceeds from their books and this is in spite of making millions during their rule."
"Ah yes."
