WASHINGTON: The United States welcomed a "social protection" agreement reached Saturday by Venezuela's government and opposition as they resumed talks after a 15-month hiatus.

"We join the international community in welcoming the resumption of negotiations," a senior administration official said of the talks in Mexico. The official said the accord marked "important steps in the right direction" in Venezuela, which is mired in a political and economic crisis.
