A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Monday directed University of Health Sciences (UHS) to allow five repatriate medical students to sit in third year MBBS examinations commencing on Tuesday (October 2). The petitioners, Qudsia Zubair, Mohsin Sanaullah and others who completed their two years of MBBS in universities of Libya and Kyrgyzstan but due to sudden law and order situation they were constrained to move back to Pakistan for their own protection.
He said in order to continue the studies in Pakistan, the petitioners approached Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) to seek permission for getting admission in third year MBBS. Their counsel, Nasir Qureshi, said the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) after considering all aspects of the matter and evaluating the petitioners through special examination issued them NoCs enabling them to get admission in any public/ private recognised medical college in Pakistan.
The petitioners after securing NoCs got admissions in private colleges, he said. However, he added, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) did not accept their admission forms for the MBBS third year examinations and denied them registration numbers too. Advocate Qureshi argued that the delay in issuing the registration numbers by the UHS in favour of petitioners and stopping them from taking the examination starting from October 2 was illegal, unconstitutional and against the fundamental rights of the petitioners. University of Health Sciences (UHS) registrar Asad Zaheer, present in the court, opposed the petition and stated that the university refused to entertain the admissions of the petitioners due to widespread irregularities being committed by private medical institutions.
The bench, however, directed the registrar to entertain the admission forms of the petitioners and issued them registration numbers immediately. The bench further directed the registrar to not to announce the result of the petitioners till final decision of their petitions by the court.
