Anti-water theft campaign: KW&SB asks IG, commissioner to take action against hydrants

02 Oct, 2012

Managing Director, Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KW&SB), Misbahuddin Farid, dispatched a letter to I.G Sindh and Commissioner Sindh to complaint about lack of police cooperation in the ongoing anti-water theft & illegal hydrants campaign. In this letter, he stated that concerned Assistant Commissioners and SHO's were directed on 10th of September to eliminate all the illegal hydrants within three days, however no actions has been taken even 20 days after the notification.
Moreover, Water Board has voluntarily shutdown all the KW&SB hydrants so that an effective strategy could be worked upon. In his letter M.D KW&SB has sent a list of 114 illegal hydrants to both the higher officials, however 32 hydrants have been shutdown so far and 82 are still operating at their full capacity selling stolen, boring or contaminated water.
This water mafia has been actively spreading ever since KW&SB shutdown their own legal hydrants; however, Sindh High Court, IG Sindh and Commissioner Sindh's orders are still neglected by the concerned officials. This does not only cause KW&SB revenue losses but also create water shortage since these hydrants steal the water from KW&SB lines and illegally sell them to the citizens of Karachi.
Therefore, your cooperation is extremely necessary to eliminate the water shortage for the better good of the public. The list sent to the officials comprise of Hafiz Hydrants at Korangi 5-1/2, Coverage Hydrant in Chakra Goth, Hussain Hydrant at Korangi Industrial Area 8000, Ghafoor Bhutto Hydrants, Sikandar Hydrant, Saqib Hydrant and an unknown hydrant are still stealing water from KW&SB lines. Moreover, 10 hydrants in Ayub Goth, 2 in Khameeso Goth, 4 in Malir River Bin Qasim, 11 in Sharafi Goth and Korangi Industrial Area, 11 in Banaras and Habib SITE area, 6 in Mangho Pir, 11 in Baldia Town and Saeedabad, 14 in Orangi Town, 5 in Nazimabad 2 and 4 in Paposh nagar are still operating.-PR
