The National Assembly and Senate Secretariats have categorically stated that there is no provision under the rules of business to take fresh declaration oath from parliamentarians, informed sources revealed to this correspondent.
In pursuance of the court decision disqualifying 11 parliamentarians for holding dual nationality and instructing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to verify whether any other parliamentarian has dual nationality, the ECP sent letters to the secretariats of the two houses requesting them to verify that they do not possess dual nationality.
The verification may take the form of an affidavit under Article 63 (1) (c) of the Constitution, the ECP source further revealed. The forms were included in the letter sent by the ECP to the National Assembly and Senate Secretariat. The sources further revealed that the secretariats of the two houses responded by stating that such a suggestion was against the rules of business and returned the affidavit forms to the ECP without filling them.
