LAHORE: British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott met the PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif at Jati Umrah and the Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan at Governor House on Friday and discussed matters of mutual interest.
In the meeting with Nawaz Sharif, bilateral relations and promotion of social sector between the two countries were discussed.
In the meeting with the governor, ways to strengthen bilateral relations, climate change and other important issues came under discussion.
British High Commissioner Jane Marriott said that it was encouraging that the government was addressing the climate change issue on priority basis. She said that Britain would extend all out support to Pakistan to tackle climate change issue.
The governor said during meeting with British HC that Britain has supported Pakistan in every difficult time including floods, earthquake, which was duly acknowledged by the Government of Pakistan.
He said that Pakistan has suffered a colossal loss in the form of flash floods due to climate change, which was also having adverse effect on the agricultural sector of Pakistan. He hoped that Britain would highlight the issue of Pakistan being affected by climate change in international forums.
“Pakistan is an agricultural country and it is very important to support farmers for the development of the agriculture sector,” he said, adding: “Pakistan People’s Party has always taken steps for the welfare of farmers and labour class.” He said the government was trying to resolve wheat crisis issue on priority and the situation had already improved.
He said that political stability is vital to boost the economy of the country. He reiterated that all parties should forget their petty differences and play due role for the country’s development.
Meanwhile, the governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan administered the oath of office to the new Chairman Punjab Public Service Commission. The governor congratulated Lt-General Muhammad Abdul Aziz (Retd) on assuming the charge of Chairman PPSC and expressed his best wishes for him.
The solemn ceremony was held in the Darbar Hall of the Governor House Lahore on Friday. Secretary I&C Punjab read out the notification regarding the appointment of Muhammad Abdul Aziz as PPSC Chairman. In the swearing-in ceremony, Secretary PPSC and members of the commission were present.
