Pakistan needs 2 million new jobs every year because of its population and population growth rate. Creation of job opportunities should be every government's top priority. However, jobs must be created through an increase in economic activity instead of through appointments in existing public sector entities that are already struggling to meet their salary bills due to what is clearly over-staffing. Pakistan Railways, it maybe recalled, was unable to pay the salaries and pensions compelling the government to release a bailout package for the purpose.
The current state of the economy with heavy loadshedding, low productivity due partly to loadshedding but partly due to continued law and order problems, increasing unemployment, high inflation and higher number of poor needs to be urgently tackled.
