Partly Facetious: The shoe doesn't fit

08 Nov, 2012

"The US election results show to me that one must identify the party's core group and then seek to ensure that they vote for you."
"You mean the African Americans who came out in numbers in Pittsburg to vote for Obama and ensured his win?"
"Indeed and that should be a lesson learned for our elections?"
"Well, if the shoe fits..."
"The shoe doesn't fit. The women vote was for Z A Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto but I am not sure if the women will vote for President Zardari."
"Why do you say that? Rural women are going to vote for their baradari, and that's where the majority of the votes are in this country."
"But city women will vote for either PML (N) or Imran Khan."
"But in Karachi women will vote MQM don't you think?"
"Agreed, notwithstanding the referendum the party is supporting with the loaded question: do you support Jinnah or the Taliban? I am reminded of Ziaul Haq's referendum question: do you support Islam or not and if you do that is a vote for Ziaul Haq."
"Right, but Ziaul Haq got the national treasury to pay for the referendum and this one is to be paid for by the MQM."
"OK, but I would also like to point out that MQM only gets votes in Karachi and Hyderabad so it is not a national party by any stretch of the imagination and these two cities have the major issue of target killings, they recently started in Hyderabad as well and I would urge the MQM and the PPP who get votes in these cities to focus on that. Let Hyderabad not turn into another Karachi."
"Going back to who will vote PPP, you reckon places where money is being spent by the party would win seats?"
"Indeed Detroit voted Obama because he gave a large bailout package to the auto sector."
"So Gujjar Khan and Larkana are done deals but what about Balochistan?"
"Packages must be spent on the people for it to impact on the elections."
"Ah I see, I forgot that minor element."
"Don't be facetious."
