Ameer Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan Syed Munawar Hasan has called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to adopt immediate and effective measures under the law to prevent corrupt government personalities and members of the parliament from contesting elections again.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, he said if the EC strictly implemented the Peoples Representative Act, there was no reason why the people could not get rid of all those playing with the destiny of the nation and the country, and an honest and competent leadership could come forward. He also urged the NAB to recover all the ill gotten wealth from the plunderers.
The JI Ameer advised the nation to get united against the corrupt elements who had been sucking the blood of the masses, adding the nation could not afford to make more mistakes, and warned that if the corrupt people got elected again in the coming elections, the country could face some big mishap.
Syed Munawar Hasan said the country had witnessed the worst form of dictatorship during the last five years in the garb of democracy. During this period, unanimously adopted resolutions of the parliament were thrown into waste paper basket, the judiciary was ridiculed and insulted and its decisions were given little weight. Despite that, the government continued making claims of rule of law and the constitution. He said President Zardari's longing for another five-year term was a joke and a manifestation of shamelessness.
He said Zardari government had been more loyal to the US than Pervez Musharraf and sacrificed vital national interests to please Washington due to which, the national stability and sovereignty remained at stake, and the menace of terrorism had spread out up to the GHQ, the air bases and air ports. In Karachi, he said, there had been a marked increase in target killings and extortion, while the coalition partners in the Sindh government, the PPP, ANP and the MQM blamed one another for that. In Balochistan, all the assembly members except one were enjoying ministerial posts and plundering public money with both hands.
