Iran supports and recognises political reforms while 'bayonets' would not bring democracy in Syria, Speaker of the Iran's Parliament Dr Ali Larijani told his Turkish counterpart Cemil Cicek on Tuesday. The two leaders held a meeting on the sideline of the first general conference of Parliamentary Assembly of Economic Co-operation Organisation (PAECO) member countries.
Larijani said that Iran and Turkey can play pivotal role for peace in Syria, adding that Iran opposed bloodshed in Syria. He said that Iran recognised the need for political reforms in Syria and believed that bayonets would not bring democracy. According to the sources, the Iranian Speaker emphasised on the need for talks between Iran and Turkey.
On the deployment of Patriot missiles, he said that Iran believed that the experience indicated that Western powers would not abandon the case easily. Expressing concern over foreign intervention in Syria, Turkish Speaker Cemil Cicek said that foreign forces would destabilise the situation in the region. On the other hand, he said: "They destroy resources in the region, waste the national wealth, and bring people suffering and hardship." He said that Turkey condemned ethnic clashes and stressed on the need for cessation of hostilities in Syria.
