Partly Facetious: Jane Doe goes with John Doe?

15 Mar, 2013

"I prefer to hire someone who is jack of all trades."
"First of all, that's a very sexy remark. Why only Jack? Why not Jill as well?"
"I was merely using a proverb, I am not sure you can make it gender neutral besides what made you think that Jack's equivalent is Jill?"
"Didn't Jack and Jill went up the hill?"
"What about Jack Spratt's wife who could eat no fat?"
"His wife was not named so I suppose you can take some licence. I would go for Jane...you know Jane Doe is someone whose name is not known..."
"Jane Doe goes with John Doe?"
"You are making this as difficult as the lack of agreement on the name of the caretaker prime minister."
"Well, it is legitimate."
"What is your solution?"
"If the media can join names of famous couples and let me give you examples of Brangelina and Saifeena then why can't the age old non-gender neutral proverbs be revised?"
"OK, but you would face a difficulty. If you combine the first two letters and the last two of Jack and Jane it comes to Jane."
"I could have told you that! A woman will always trump a man as far as I am concerned."
"No bias there I can see."
"Don't be facetious, anyway more seriously I like someone who knows all trades and is master of none to work at my house, you know there are all kinds of issues and..."
"I get it but with respect to the caretaker prime minister who falls in that category?"
"Rehman Malik, he can be servile, he can be arrogant, he can take abuse from his own party leaders, he can take ridicule from the media, he can blame poor performance in departments that are his responsibility on others, he can blame poor performance..."
"But he is partisan."
"So is the rest of Pakistan with elections so close."
"You are being facetious today."
