Government urged to take notice of dilapidated Jam Sadiq Bridge

23 Mar, 2013

Chairman, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati), Mohammad Zubair Chhaya has urged the government to take notice of the serious condition of Jam Sadiq Bridge and direct the concerned department to initiate its reconstruction work on war footing. He further mentioned that PC-I of its repairs had already been prepared and approved by the competent authority, but due to paucity of fund the work was not started yet.
He said the bridge's condition was very dangerous and it might collapse at any time, and demanded the local administration to at least close it for the heavy traffic until it revamped fully. He said the Association in this regard had approached ministers, chief minister and high government officials many times in recent past but nothing had been done as yet and God forbid any disaster could occur any time if it caved in.
He warned that the bridge needed complete revamping as all its pillars were decaying fast and not in a position to hold pressure of light or heavy traffic any further. Former President FPCCI, S M Muneer said that Jam Sadiq Bridge was being massively used by numerous container-mounted trucks on their way to upcountry destinations and back to the Karachi port, therefore it needed immediate repairs, and if restoration work was not done forthwith, it could collapse anytime.
President All Karachi Industrial Alliance Mian Zahid Hussain said the government had remained unmoved at that very sensitive issue and human lives were under serious threat due to extremely dilapidated condition of Jam Sadiq Bridge. He said the bridge that connected the industrial area with the city centre was in a very poor condition and if its reconstruction and renovation was not carried out immediately, any big accident could occur.
