'Water availability key to enhancing agriculture yield'

24 Mar, 2013

Water availability to farmers plays a key role in enhancing per acre yield and achieving the targets of agro-production and food autarky. In this regard, it is quite essential to promote efficient use of water in the agri-sector so that all the farmers get their equitable share of water. It is, therefore, imperative to sensitise the farmers as well as the general public about the efficient use of water resources so that this important boon may not get wasted.
General Manager Punjab Irrigation & Drainage Authority (PIDA) Mian Maqbool Ahmad stated this in an official circular issued to the field formation for promoting efficient use of water in the farming community by introducing latest water saving technologies. The GM-PIDA in the circular asked the field officers to include the aspect of efficient use of water in the capacity-building programs of Farmer Organisations (FOs).
He said that promotion of efficient use of water is a collective responsibility of the society adding that available water resources should be used with utmost care so that the lack of irrigation water could be curtailed and tail-end farmers also get their due share. The farmers should also be sensitised about sowing such crops which need less amounts of water, he pointed out. Similarly, the FOs also must realise that farmers and the general public that respect the water rights of others should be treated as a moral as well as social duty.
