First woman to contest from Dir

01 Apr, 2013

First time in the history of Dir district, a woman has come forward to take part in the direct elections from NA-34. Nusrat Begum, wife of Karim Khan, has filed nomination forms with the concerned returning officer by personally appearing in his office.
After filing the nomination forms, Nusrat Begum said she was hopeful of success in the forthcoming general elections. She said if given a chance, she will try her best to change the destiny of the district, especially the women of the area. She said those who were elected from the area in the past did not do justice with the local people.
Nusrat said she has been elected district vice president of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) in the intra-party polls, therefore, she was hopeful of getting the party ticket.
It merits mentioning here that in the past women of the district were not allowed to cast their votes. But this time around a positive change has been witnessed and the political parties have softened their stance about the women's participation in the election process.
