Many cultures have produced pottery which combines a function as a vessel. And clay is one of the oldest materials for pottery as well as clay being the medium originally modelled for casting. Hamir Soomro also got inspired by ceramics works about two years ago and finds this medium quite interesting.
He discovers new skills inside him and seems very comfortable with clay. He showcases his individualistic ceramics work at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS) Gallery for the second time consecutively. His first exhibition of ceramic works was in the group show ' Revelations-2012' at IVS Gallery last year.
Hamir Soomro is basically an architect by profession; he is currently a senior faculty member at IVS. Previously he has done some work in water colour.
He portrays his feelings more openly in ceramics especially pottery. He got motivated after attending ceramics workshops and decided to seriously pursue the use of ceramics in his artworks. He uses glazed white clay as a medium and instead of gas fire uses wood fire in an especially designed traditional wood kiln to fire and glaze his works. The comprehensive collection of 64 pieces ceramics works consists of sophisticated pots and pans, vases and bowls with different lining designs and a tinge of red and green giving the pottery a new look.
The modelling of clay and ceramics brings a self satisfaction for the artist who feels close to the soil and the smell of the wet clay moves his heart. The freedom of materials and process of moulding as desire makes this medium more appealing and a wide variety of artworks can be moulded or cast.
The beautiful forms of ceramics depict experiences in life, the nostalgia associated with them and the emotions of the distant past. The dramatic appearance of the pottery engages the viewers who try to understand the message hidden in the forms and spaces between clay and ceramic moulds.
Each art piece portrays passion for the medium. The deep concepts related to human lives evolve into these fine structures reflecting various perspectives in clay. Beautiful and eye catching the imagination and sensitivity give clay different shapes.
Engaged and involved in creative work producing ceramics pottery he is actually transforming his feelings in these art pieces. The detail of his artworks is commendable and speaks about his artistic ability. It seems as if clay soothes and calms him and rescues him from this busy world leading him to a state of creative trance.
