Former employees of Karachi Port Trust (KPT)) on Monday staged a sit-in to besiege all of entrances of the trust headquarters in protest against the non-implementation of son quota, seaport sources said. "Son Quota Bahali Action Committee" was holding the protest led by an ex-employee Nazir Khan, they said.
The protestors showed resentment against the trust for non implementing former Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani's announcement on the quota restoration, they said. A heavy contingent of police, Port Security Force and personnel of Pakistan Navy were deployed around the head office to meet any untoward incident.
The enraged protestors were chanting slogans in favour of their demands and asking the authority concerned to comply with the former prime minister's orders to employ their children at the harbour. The sit-in held the KPT staffers and officers hostage for nearly several hours as the protestors refused to let anyone step out of the head office till their demands were met. The protestors began their protest at 12pm, who stayed unmoved during the spells of torrential rain.
When contacted, KPT spokesman said General Manager, Administration, Rauf Akhtar Farooqi is holding talks with the ex-employees' leaders at the head office to reach agreement. He said the protesting ex-KPT employees are from Keamari and Lyari who want the restoration of son quota. However, he denied that protestors have created troubles for KPT head office staffers, saying "everything is in its normal way and undisturbed". He said the KPT has used no force against the protestors.
