India appeals to free Sarabjit

30 Apr, 2013

India appealed to Pakistan on Monday to release an Indian on death row who is in a coma after being attacked by inmates in a Lahore jail. Sarabjit Singh, 49, was convicted for spying and carrying out four bombings that killed 14 people in Pakistan in 1990. But his execution was put off indefinitely by President Asif Ali Zardari's government.
The motive behind the attack by fellow inmates Friday at Kot Lakhpat jail remains unknown. India requested his return in order to provide him medical treatment. The government in its appeal asked Pakistan to "take a sympathetic and humanitarian view of this case" and release him.
