02 May, 2013

Cash bids for hard red winter wheat were steady in the US Plains on Tuesday as production potential for the new crop looked poor, according to a new condition report from the government. The US Department of Agriculture said Monday afternoon that 33 percent of the new US winter wheat crop was rated good to excellent as of Sunday, while 35 percent was rated poor to very poor and 32 percent was rated in fair condition.
Kansas, generally the top US wheat producing state, had 39 percent of its crop in poor to very poor condition, 34 percent fair and 27 percent rated good to excellent, according to USDA. Texas wheat was in the worst shape, with 68 percent of the wheat crop rated poor to very poor, 25 percent rated fair and 7 percent good and none excellent.
