Supreme Court declares Murad Shah ineligible for polls

03 May, 2013

The Supreme Court on Thursday barred former Sindh Minister and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) candidate for PS-73, Syed Murad Shah, from contesting general elections for holding dual nationality. The Sindh High Court (SHC) had allowed Shah to contest general elections for a Sindh Assembly seat, but the apex court said in its order that Shah failed to produce any evidence to substantiate his claim that he has surrendered his foreign nationality.
A three-judge bench, headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard the matter and upheld the decisions of Returning Officer and Election Tribunal, respectively by declaring the SHC verdict null and void.
