PML-N government to introduce civil service reforms: Nawaz

04 May, 2013

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has said the PML-N, after coming into power, will review police laws to transform the police force into a depoliticised, efficient and effective law-enforcement body. Talking to different delegations on Friday, Nawaz said the PML-N will bring improvement in the "Thana culture" to remove difficulties faced by the complainants to register FIRs and to safeguard against harassment of innocent persons.
"All appointments in the police department in BPS-11 and above will be made on merit through the respective Provincial Public Service Commissions on the basis of competitive examinations," he said. According to him, a modern, well-equipped, and citizen-friendly police hold key to fighting crime, maintaining peace and law and order in the society. Police would be reformed to become a community-based smart police equipped with modern tools and technologies. Further, police stations will be converted into Model Police Stations under a phased programme. Forensic investigation capability will be developed in each district while national and provincial databases of criminals will be built in co-ordination with Nadra.
It may be noted that the PML-N Manifesto for Election 2013 envisages bringing reforms of the civil services at all levels to ensure better governance and improved delivery of services to the public. The PML-N manifesto says Pakistan is a complex society and needs to initiate a unique and bold attempt to reform its Civil Services system. It will be one of the key components of a larger attempt to fundamentally restructure the country's state apparatus for democratic governance.
