After the killing of confirmed condemned Indian convict Sarabjit Singh and assault on Pakistani convict Sanaullah in India, the security in and around all cells of foreign convicts, especially Indian civil convicts has been doubled across the Punjab province. The overall security at all 32 jails comprising a population of 50,792 prisoners against the sanctioned strength of 21,527 has further been strengthened with round-the-clock patrolling by armed contingents.
Inspector General of Prisons Punjab, Mian Farooq Nazeer in an interview with APP here Sunday said that on the special directive of the caretaker Chief Minister Punjab, foolproof security arrangements have been fully ensure at all jails with the deployment of special contingents equipped with sophisticated weapons. He said modern network of metal detectors, screening machines and close circuit television sets had also been made functional to check the smuggling of contraband articles, besides arms and ammunition. He said all Superintendents of Jails have also been directed to submit their security inspection report daily to their respective DIG and IG positively failing which strict action would be taken.
