09 May, 2013

The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a detailed report from the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) on the compensation paid to the affectees of Iraq-Kuwait war. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry noted that the compensation had not been paid to a large number of the affectees despite lapse of several years.
During the course of hearing, Gul Hassan Aurangzeb, the counsel for OPF, apprised the court that the OPF had distributed Rs 710 million as compensation amongst 27,000 affectees of the war to date, adding that total 66000 Pakistanis were affected due to that conflict.
He further stated that the OPF has also received another Rs 970 million which would be distributed shortly among the rest of the affected people, adding that the said amount did not include the service charges and other expenditure. The Chief Justice remarked that action was taken by the OPF only after the Supreme Court took notice of the case. He further stated that the evidence of corruption had been found in the disbursement of the amount. The case was adjourned for ten days.
