Spanish teachers, pupils strike

10 May, 2013

Teachers and students across Spain went on strike Thursday to protest budget cuts enacted as part of the government's austerity drive. Trade unions said more than 65 per cent of teachers at schools and universities took part in the strike that "paralysed" the education sector. Two police officers were injured in clashing with students who attempted to burn tyres and rubbish containers in the eastern city of Valencia.
The strike followed weeks of rallies over budget cuts of more than 6.7 billion euros (8.7 billion dollars) in the education sector since 2010 and moves towards academic streaming in schools.
