International Monetary Fund (IMF) team is due in Pakistan in late June for holding policy discussions on mitigating economic vulnerabilities with the new government after the forthcoming general elections. Gerry Rice, Director Communications Department IMF, has said that a staff team is planning to visit Islamabad late in June to continue the policy discussions on mitigating economic vulnerabilities in Pakistan.
"Elections to be held soon and we remain closely engaged with Pakistan," said Gerry Rice while briefing media about the postelection scenario in the country. He further said that the authorities met with the Fund during the spring meetings a few weeks ago. And the discussions focused on the difficult economic challenges being faced by Pakistan.
"We urge the authorities to begin taking the necessary actions to help stabilise the economy and lay the ground for future growth," Rice added. To a question about IMF offer of $5 billion loan to Pakistan, Rice said that there has been no formal request for a programme from the Pakistani authorities.
