The general elections held in the country have brought some unexpected results as some political heavyweights of mainstream political parties have lost their bid for assembly seats. As was predicted in earlier surveys conducted by national and international institutions, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has emerged as the leading political forces followed by Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People's Party Parliamentarian (PPPP).
PTI has swept Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province by defeating political pundits of all political parties including Awami National Party (ANP) and PPPP and to some extent JUI and PML-N. PTI clinched 16 National Assembly seats in the province. Till the filling of this report, PML-N bagged six seats, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) six and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) three National Assembly seats. PTI was also leading in the provincial seats in the province.
ANP, which governed the province for last five years, failed to bag even a single NA seat. According to latest results, PTI will be in a position to form government in the province without the support of any other party. ANP heavyweights, including party chief Asfandyar Wali Khan, former Railway Minister Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour and former Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti have lost their respective constituencies.
PTI chief Imran Khan defeated Ghulam Ahmad Bilour by a margin of over 45,000 votes, bagging more than 66,000 votes from NA-1, Peshawar. PPP heavyweights, including former Communications Minister Arbab Alamgir Khan and Noor Alam Khan, have also lost their constituencies to PTI candidates. PML-N heavyweights, including Amir Muqam, have also lost their respective seats to PTI candidates. Former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf also lost to PML-N candidate ex-district nazim Raja Javed Ikhlas by about 61,000 votes. Firdous Ashiq Awan and former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani family have also lost their constituencies.
